some good articles from SOS. a few years old, but still highly relevant for anyone playing out with hardware.

what tips can anyone else add?
my addition: have a perimeter set up around the gear, and ideally have someone to make sure that no one gets inside that perimeter. you don't want to be interrupted by people making requests, asking for a b-day shout-out, or looking for a place to rest their drink.
one time me and tom played out, we were on a stage that was about 6 inches above the dance floor and we didn't have much of a buffer zone. as we were packing up our gear a fight broke out way too close to us. i didn't even think twice about dropping a guy twice my size as soon as he got loud, and he was close enough that i didn't have to step towards him (too close to the gear to be talking shit and waving your fist!!!). i didn't hurt him (too much) or beat him up, but i sat him on the floor (where he wasn't going to stumble into the gear and his body served as a buffer between the fight and the gear) and held him there until everything cooled off. then i gave him a pat on the back, apologized for holding him there, and thanked him for being cool about it. i didn't mention that his body would have been just as useful as a buffer even if he wasn't conscious, or that he would have been if he gave me any shit.
and of course we've also had some less exciting problems from people getting too close.
