Everything I wanted from APC40, and it would fit in a backpack 
I hope it requires Ableton 7 only for two-way communication, and would work with older versions.
EDIT: Nevermind, Lite "Launchpad" version of Ableton 8 can send MIDI to hardware: http://www.ableton.com/pages/2009/novation_launchpad_vs_live8

definitely got ideas from the monome community and with max for live will probably almost be able to be a monome. i've been using a monome 40h for a couple of months and it drives me crazy most of the time because i've always hated setting up programs on computers and dealing with that shit. (didn't really know what i was getting into before i got it. oops). i love the community and the stuff that can be done with it but it sometimes seems overwhelming and aggravating so i take lots of breaks from using. and getting it to work with ableton live has been a huge pain in the ass. somewhat got it using 7up live but haven't gotten deep in. the launchpad seems like it's worth trying out for $199! especially for the monome like possibilities and size.

Launchpad users will soon be able to download a Max for Live step sequencer patch from Novation and more Max for Live patches are planned for the future. |

No knobs?  I see that instead of knobs you have to run your finger up and down rubber pads to change levels.
It would be cool if something like this was a touchscreen.

not bad.. some cool stuff.. the creators of the monome will never sell another 8x8 hahaha.. I'm assuming the novation is alot cheaper thanks to mass production?
but I think the only reason the monome works with such a minimal interface is because of the programs that are made for it -
using it as a live controller it seems it's a little lacking.. I'm sure people will use it as a monome, but from the perspective of being designed as an ableton controller... It's a little plain isnt it? "I can trigger clips now from a big pile of buttons. yay.. I can also trigger drums etc... It's small enough to fit in a backpack, but I need to bring my other controller as well anyway"
I'm glad it's nothing like what I'm working on at the moment though.. doing all this soldering for nothing.. would've pissed me right off!

not my cup of tea for sure but it´s a nice controller
my only complain is that I don´t think that use a line of pads for controller dutties is a good idea
in the video they seems to be easy to do but the pads looks like the silicone ones on the electribe series and it´s almost impossible to slide your finger over them to switch them on/off
maybe they´re more on the plastic/clicky side like the step buttons on the elektron stuff
anyway you get a very poor controller resolution of 3 bits
the design is VERY monome to me, and this is way cooler than the AKAI for my taste...

not locked.. but I wonder what it could be useful for in other major DAWs? Obviously max etc.. could make it more useful, but I dont see how you could do much in logic for example.

The $200 price point is nice. I could see very practical application for this. I'm working on a live band for Nathan Isaksson and we'll be using Ableton for backing tracks, so all I need is to be able to go up/down and launch scenes. Honestly I might wanna solo/cut or adjust volumes too, so I'm using the M-Audio trigger finger. Those babies are cheap with 8 sliders, 4 knobs and 16 buttons. Plenty for basic backing tracks/loops with a band.
I don't think this unit will be the center of a rig like the APC-40, but more of an ancillary controller. If all you need to do is launch clips/scenes then this thing is pretty slick.
